P2230 PRATINAS: Son of Purronides or Ekkomios, of Phlios, a tragic poet. He competed against Aischulos and Choirilos in the 70th Olympiad, and he was the first to write Satyr plays. While a play of his was being performed,(1) it happened that the benches (2) on which the spectators were seated fell down, and for this reason a theatre was built by the Athenians.(3) And he produced 50 plays, of which 32 were Satyr plays; but he won only once.

Prytaneion: Thesmothetion, Tholos. (1) For the Athenians it was a small public building in which people who obtained an appropriate degree of honor among them dined at public expense. A lot of effort was put into obtaining such a reward, for they habitually granted such a privilege for great successes. Alternatively, the storehouse of fire,(2) where there was an everlasting fire and where praying went on.

Bibliography

Notes:

1. The author is apparently confusing three different buildings here: the Prytaneion, the Thesmotheteion and the Tholos. The confusion may have arisen because all three buildings were venues for dining at public expense (Wycherley [1957] 171).

2. There is some evidence that a perpetual fire was housed in the Prytaneion (Wycherley [1957] 171), so the author seems to be simply reporting another way of referring to the same building. Whether the author himself is aware of that is unclear.
